Confidentiality Rules

Section 2.2-3700(B) states that records are presumed open “unless specifically made exempt pursuant to this chapter or other specific provision of law.” Specific provisions of law prohibiting disclosure of particular records are found scattered throughout the Virginia Code. The following pages include at least 152 of these laws, found in 33 titles of the Virginia Code.* This list should not be considered exhaustive; there may be other provisions not found here. The list will be updated periodically. If you know of a confidentiality provision that should be included, contact us.

Click on one of the following pages to browse confidentiality provisions, as of Oct. 1, 2001, in the different Code titles.

Special thanks to Tarah Grant, Summer 2000 VCOG Intern, for her hard work compiling this list.
