Several Petersburg city councilors said they were caught off guard after learning two data centers have already had their site plans approved and two more are waiting in the wings. “I really think the city administration needs to keep us all better informed,” Ward 4 Councilor Charlie Cuthbert said at council’s July 21 meeting while holding a printout of an article in Richmond BizSense posted earlier in the day. Through a Virginia Freedom of Information Act request, the news outlet reported that two of four data center proposals – a $1.1 billion 75-acre site on County Drive (U.S. Route 460), and a 73-acre, three-building site on Wagner Road – have already received site-plan approval from the Petersburg Planning Department. … Cuthbert said, “I think the administration needs to do a better job of informing City Council and also informing the public what’s going on. We talk about transparency, and yet, it’s like we live in a cave with no lights on.”
