A Cleveland federal judge overseeing hundreds of lawsuits against drug companies over the nation's opioid epidemic rejected a request from media outlets to allow the release of information collected by the government regarding painkiller sales and shipments. U.S. District Judge Dan Polster wrote Thursday that the Freedom of Information Act allows the federal government to withhold confidential commercial information and certain information compiled for law enforcement purposes. Information from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's Automated Reports and Consolidated Ordering System, or ARCOS, database fits into both of those categories, the judge said.

Gun control groups lost an emergency bid Friday to block a Texas organization from posting instructions to 3-D print a gun online. The firm, a non-profit called Defense Distributed, had reached a settlement with the State Department last month that would allow it to publish the plans for their plastic handgun called "The Liberator" on their website — five years after the government first made the group take them down.
